Decanter’s Top Barolo - 19/20 - 5 Stars
"an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years"
Scents of leather, tar and roses. Dark fresh fruit with vigorous finish. Drink 2011 to 2021. 5 stars and 19/20. Highest rated of all 2007 Barolo tasted Nov 2011.
Wine Spectator rate 2007 as the equal best vintage for the last 10 years in Piedmont and in November last year when Decanter magazine tasted the Barolo wines from this vintage, they rated the Ciabot Berton Barolo 2007 the best of the vintage tasting. This is a brilliant Barolo reflecting a very elegant year where the Barolos are not only absolutely ready to drink now but can also be cellared for another 10 years. The signature Barolo tannins one looks for are certainly there, but they are very silky. So this wine will please not only the hardened Barolo fan, but also people tasting a Barolo for the first time in their lives. Nonetheless, as you would expect with great Italian reds, the wine needs food to send the pleasure meters to the max. Finally, with the strong Aussie dollar, pricing has never been better. This is a lovely wine that is packed tight with spicy oak renderings, chocolate Nutella, almond paste, red fruit and roasted espresso bean. The wine shows elegant, drying tannins with creamy mocha flavors that last long in the mouth. Drink after 2015. 93 points.
Wine Enthusiast Magazine - Deep ruby with orange tinges. Opulent, sweet oak and fruit cake, but much more compact and tannic on the palate. Fruit-cake notes on the finish with hints of cherry. Quite good, but with drying tannin on the finish...This is a lovely wine that is packed tight with spicy oak renderings, chocolate Nutella almond paste, red fruit and roasted espresso bean. The 2007 Barolo is an attractive wine laced with crushed flowers, spices and sweet red berries, all of which come together nicely on a refined mid-weight frame. The vibrant, silky finish is quite pretty. This delicate, approachable Barolo is an excellent choice for drinking over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017. Ciabot Berton is a solid, reliable producer in La Morra. Drink 2012 - 2017. Rating 90.
