2010 BIONDI SANTI BRACCALE IGT
Jacopo Biondi Santi (son of Franco Biondi Santi – who made the Biondi Santi family famous by producing benchmarkmBrunello di Montalcino at Tenuta Il Greppo) began producing wine at Castello di Montepo (in Maremma, Tuscany) in the mid-1990s after a dispute with his famous father over the style of the Biondi Santi wines in the future. This rift was resolved before Franco’s death in 2013 and today Jacapo heads the winemaking team at both Tenuta Il Greppo and Castello di Montepo.
This “Braccale” is one of the “entry level” wines made at Castello di Montepo and is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Merlot in this 2010 bottling. It was matured for 10 months in French oak barriques and 6 in stainless steel tanks ahead of bottling.
An intense ruby colour in terms of appearance, Jacopo Biondi Santi’s “Braccale” is quite densely packed in an aromatic sense, with notes of, dark cherry, coffee and prune rising from the glass. Medium to full on the palate, this “Braccale” offers compact fruit notes and an upright structure. The dark fruit notes of the nose lead, with hints of more developmental tones of coffee and a hint of hazelnut coming forward as it evolves on the tongue. There is a good sense of length and enough acidity to evoke the identity of the Sangiovese grape.
SCORE: 88 points.

"The 2010 Braccale is a dense and compelling expression of Sangiovese Grosso (with 20% Merlot) that shows hints of wild Mediterranean brush and herb for added elegance and class. At its core are dark fruit nuances and lingering tones of crushed mineral or dry earth. The wine drinks beautifully right now, thanks to its softly velvety tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018." —Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (August 2013)
"Ripe blackberry and plum flavors are backed by stiff tannins in this red. Finishes on the astringent side, with a tactile sensation. Sangiovese Grosso and Merlot. Best from 2013 through 2016. 12,500 cases made." —Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator (2012)
